The Air Guitarist of the Month: Devil's Niece, vol. 1

The Air Guitarist of the Month: Devil's Niece, vol. 1

It was in 2009 when I discovered a “Media Aesthetics and Air Guitar” course and
a workshop called “Playing Air Guitar” in the university calendar. I was anxious to
take part! For me as a huge fan of Rock music it seemed to be a really diversified
course. Our lecturer Mathias Mertens aka “Eric ‘Nu’ Matic, the other students and
me did an intensely work on the history of Rock music, the electric guitar as
cultural icon and we created a Guitar Hero-Checklist on the basis of the great
guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, Angus Young and Jimmy Page.

And of course we were playing air guitar! First exercise: to pick up the (air)
guitar and play it to the sound of “Whole lotta love” by Led Zeppelin.
Furthermore we practised the Windmill (up- and downstroke), the Duckwalk (the
Angus Young AND the Chuck Berry version), the neckbreaker and a lot of other
great moves. After a few weeks we were ready for the stage! We just had to
create our show characters. For me it was absolutely clear that I should be a
relative of the devil. Because of my red hair and my marked preference for dark
and Rock music inspired clothes I had an idea for my stage outfit quite quick.
The Devil’s Niece was born. She is a half evil, half charming girl who tends to
tease other people. In the past she was a typical EMO-kid. She’s wild and has a
bittersweet nature. The Niece loves bats and Marilyn Manson of course.
My first participation in the German Championships in 2009 ended with the 4th
place. In 2010 I was the Vice Champion and last year I won the German and –
maybe you know it – the World Championships.

When I was a kid I had problems to find a good hobby for me. I tried to play the
flute, I was playing soccer and I was drawing myself at the painting school. But
nothing really satisfied me. After maybe 20 years of searching I found MY hobby.
Air guitar means so much for me, I'm at a loss for words. I feel free! When I’m
playing air guitar everything’s feeling absolutely perfect.
