Air Guitars at Kazakstan

Justin "Nordic Thunder" Howard visited Astana Expo at Kazakstan couple of weeks ago. Here are his thoughts on the amazing trip!

HOW WAS THE EXPERIENCE IN ASTANA?

The World Expo in Astana was an incredible experience and one I won’t soon forget.  This wasn’t the first time I have been a representative of Oulu as I have been a guest to the travel fair in Helsinki twice, but this was the first time I have been a representative to the country of Finland on a global scale.  Having the privilege to be invited to the other side of the planet to represent a country I truly love was an honor I never imagined would be bestowed upon me.

There were 115 countries on display at the expo in Astana, and I can say without a doubt that Finland left its mark on those in attendance to the expo.  The entire Business Oulu crew were exceptionally professional and those who presented during the breakout sessions shared with the world that Finland, especially Oulu, is THE place of innovation and technology.  And also home to some crazy folks like a magician, a polar bear, and a half naked man who plays air guitar.

WHAT KIND OF RESPONSE DID YOU GET?

Our team in Astana was received exceptionally well and we certainly were the “crazy Finns”.  This was especially noticeable during our concert that took place in the city center where several thousands of people came to watch Finland display some of its cultural exports.  This was also the first time in my career as an air guitarist where I felt like a “real rock star”.  Once I finished my 6 minutes and 66 seconds of Slayer, I stepped off the stage after closing the concert to find a sea of people wanting to take photographs with me.

I have never experienced anything like this and I doubt I ever will again.  The people of Astana were so supportive and full of love.  You can ask any of us who were there…you could FEEL the good vibes in the air.  Lots of sweaty hugs were given, smiles were shared and I even had parents who handed me their babies to hold.  We were all made to feel welcomed and loved by the people of Astana.  In fact, I felt the love there so much that it is my hope to return and help establish a Kazakhstan air guitar championships.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS YEARS' CHAMPIONSHIPS?

My expectations for this year’s championships may come as a surprise to some, in that my expectations are pretty high.  Just maybe not in the areas some might think.  This is the 11th year I have been a competitive air guitarist and I have discovered a lot about life while being involved in this world of make believe guitar playing.  I have learned to love and accept people, myself included, for who they are.  I have learned to be more compassionate and understanding.  I think these are also lessons many learn when they enter the world of air guitar if they are willing to see past the invisible guitar itself.

The Air Guitar World Championships is about so much more than just a competition.  And Oulu is so much more than just a city that hosts this whacky competition.  The Air Guitar World Championships is like a giant ship that delivers people from all walks of life from all corners of the world to the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia.  And once there, Oulu acts as a bridge that unites us all together with the purpose of bringing like-minded individuals together to spread the real message of competitive air guitar.  And as you know, that message is one of world peace.  Air guitarists in my eyes aren’t only ambassadors of their countries, but they are also ambassadors of peace.

My theory is that if all of us air guitarists can come together and ignore our home countries political beliefs, religious beliefs, or whatever other conflicts may be happening and focus on good will, peace and understanding…then there’s no reason at all those “in charge” of the world can’t do the same. So, my expectations are high in that I expect those who are coming to the AGWC to be open minded, loving and understanding individuals. Oh, and they MUST like to have fun. And enjoying pizza on the sidewalk at 4:00am doesn’t hurt either.

THE CANADIAN AIR GUITAR EVENT MODEL – Air Guitar for Good

THE CANADIAN AIR GUITAR EVENT MODEL – Air Guitar for Good

If it’s about making joy and creating world peace – why not have fun doing it while raising money for charitable interests?

A ROCKING WAY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

People ride bikes, run marathons, eat hot dogs, pour buckets of ice water on their heads – all in the name of getting attention to causes and challenging others to contribute to worthy initiatives. Why not Air Guitar?

AIR GUITAR TO HELP KIDS

Our most important objective is to grow the property of Air Guitar as a rocking fundraising event for RIGHT TO PLAY CANADA– A charitable organization dedicated to helping children facing adversity in war torn regions around the world through play and education. We’ve raised over $10,000 for our charities to date since 2014.

AIR GUITARISTS as FUNDRAISERS?

While not every person who straps on an Air Guitar is initially into it for the charitable reasons, ultimately, each Air Guitarist becomes both an entertainer and an advocate for their community to come and contribute to the events and the charity. Their friends buy tickets, they share the event which raises awareness for the charity and who knows, they might even become sponsors one day.

FINANCIAL OBJECTIVES

Our aim is to always meet the 50/50 ratio of DONATION vs. PRIZE ALLOCATION or better. So that if the flights to Finland and hotel costs are $2500. We ensure that $2500 minimum is donated to our charity. We used a Kickstarter campaign to help us get our initial prize and donation to charity back in 2014.

Air Guitar Canada

HOW HAS IT WORKED?

In 2014 we had 2 events - a qualifier and our National Championships. In 2015 we expanded to 6 events. In 2016 we had 8 and now in 2017 we have 10. Brand new organizers have jumped on board the charitable model and made it work. Not all new locations and venues have been a success. Sometimes it’s hard to build the community from nothing, but we now have 6 STRONG recurring events with Toronto, Ottawa, Saskatoon, Red Deer, Montreal and Medicine Hat.

OTHER BENEFITS OF DOING IT FOR CHARITY?

- People are more inclined to lend monetary and sponsorship support

- You can dare people to participate and try AIR GUITAR

- The local media love seeing people do fun things for good causes

- Everyone is a volunteer! Great way to build community!

- No EGO! Not that rock stars are ever ego maniacs.

- You get the ‘right’ people involved. Good people. Who are involved for the right reasons.

Happy to talk to other organizers and share everything we have and how we’ve done it. Just reach out. Our mission is to grow this idea and bring the fun of Air Guitar to the world.

Dutch Champion - Literally Guilty Director

10th Dutch Air Guitar Championships were hosted in De Melkweg in Amsterdam and received wide press attention.

Sita ‘The Guilty Director’ van Sante (32) became the first female Dutch Air Guitar Champion. Her stagename says it all; as a theatrical director, she is  working on a stageplay in which an air guitar player plays an important role. She asked her actors to participate, but also agreed to take part herself, hence ‘The Guilty Director’. In the qualifying round she came in third. After that, she wanted to go all the way for the title. With a mash up of songs ranging from ‘Wooly Bully’ by Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs to ‘No One Knows’ by Queens of the Stone Age, she blew away the judges by her performance, creativity and skills. The voting of the judges was unanimous. She works in Amsterdam and has two children.

Pictures of the final can be found at the Dutch Air Guitar facebook page!

JAPAN BRINGS IN NEW AIR GUITAR BLOOD BY TAKING OVER THE WORLD TITLE

JAPAN BRINGS IN NEW AIR GUITAR BLOOD BY TAKING OVER THE WORLD TITLE

The Air Guitar World Champion 2014 is Nanami ”Seven Seas” Nagura of Japan

The Northern Finnish city of Oulu embraced yet again the world peace during the 19th edition of the Air Guitar World Championships. The World Final on Fri 29 August turned out to be victorious for the Japanese who had traveled to Oulu with the largest team in years – including this year’s national air guitar champion Nanami ”Seven Seas” Nagura.

After a tight air-off with the reigning US champion Matt ”Airistotle” Burns, Seven Seas turned out to be invincible also on the world final stage. The American team had to give in for the Japanese Air Guitar fury when the 19-year-old samurai girl beat also the 2013 World Champion Eric ”Mean” Melin, who scored the 3rd place. After two years under the US ruling, the trophy of Air Guitar shall spread its peaceful message from the land of the rising sun in 2014.

The message of peace was strongly present at the World Final celebration, when the all-shouting male choir Huutajat declared an Ode to Joy – along with the Ukranian and Russian air guitarists Rezo ”Baron Horse-Stealer” Gamrekelidze and Alex ”Devilseducer” Gott in a peace-loving Air Guitar statement. The audience was also enchanted with the sensual Finnish pop duo Ukkosmaine. The evening was hosted by Dan ”Björn Türoque” Crane and included also some special appearances of the 2011 and 2012 World Champions Aline ”The Devil’s Niece” Westphal and Justin ”Nordic Thunder” Howard.

The honorary jury included the Head of the Jury, guitarist Juha Torvinen, showdancer Outi Räsänen, a culture personality and the conductor of Huutajat Petri Sirviö as well as two national Air Guitar organizers Mathias Mertens (DE) and Ivalyo Botushanov (BG).

The compulsory round was performed on TNT Diet by Michael Monroe.

"Losing Yourself in The Song Is a Beautiful Thing"

Two months have passed since Mean Melin was crowned the World Champion. Representing the international Air Guitar community has kept him busy lately - took him even to the BBC News to discuss the scientific aspect of the air guitar with a Cambridge professor - and yet he found some time to share his inspiring thoughts with us. Here's the story about a late bloomer who became the world's number one Air Guitarist. And he keeps doing us proud , that's for sure!

****

"It’s been two months now since I’ve had the honor of being the Air Guitar World Champion, and I have to tell you - it’s still sinking in. I had such an amazing time meeting people from all over the world who are addicted to this crazy sport/art form as much as I am.

I am a late bloomer. Five years ago was the first time I had even heard that this hilarious subculture of music fans and shame-free freaks even existed, and ever since my first competition, I have been working to spread the word as an air guitar ambassador in the U.S. I’m excited to expand that this year.

Air Guitarists and the International Day of Peace

In the name of Air Guitar, join the International Peace Day!

Air Guitar World Championships and Justin "Nordic Thunder" Howard, the Spiritual Guide in Air Guitar, encourage all the Airheads around the world to participate in the peaceful celebration on Saturday 21 September.

Your action for peace can be either huge or tiny, visible or invisible, there or in air - no pressure! Some inspirational words by our Spiritual Guide:

"Greetings fellow air heads!

As many of you may remember during the Airimonies at this year's AGWC, I spoke a bit about the power of air guitar. I specifically talked about the feeling of happiness, love and peace that we all feel during the week we spend together. If you remember, I mentioned that those feelings didn't have to stay in Oulu. Instead, we can carry those feelings throughout the year in our everyday lives. We can achieve those feelings by very simply smiling at a person on the street. Or by holding a door open for a stranger. You can even spend an entire day giving out as many high fives as you possibly can! Not only will you benefit from the feelings that you will achieve from committing these peaceful acts, but the people on the receiving end will experience those same feelings as well. In turn, they may seek to do the same for others and then we've created this infectious spread of happiness, love and peace.

This Saturday (September 21st) happens to be International Peace Day. Again, we can achieve these feelings every day, but this Satuday let's all take this opportunity to combine our powers and project some positivity into the world. If we join forces with the rest of the world who observe this day, we'll be doing our part to make the world a better place!

ROCK ON!"

American Mean Melin Rules the Air Guitar Week

American Mean Melin Rules the Air Guitar Week

Air Guitar World Championships 2013 was a tight twist to two Dark Horses. Thursday's victorious Eric "Mean Melin" Melin (US) also nailed both of his performances in the Friday's World Final - after being challenged by his countryman, Doug "The Thunder" Stroock. As a result, The Thunder's oozingly sexual air guitar moves couldn't compete with Mean Melin's straight-forward rock charisma: the Kansas-based Dave Grohl lookalike is inevidably going home with the World Title of Air Guitar and the hand-made Flying Finn electric guitar.

The Air Guitarist of the Month: Nordic Thunder, vol. 3

AIR GUITAR IS A VESSEL

I’ve been competing professionally in air guitar for over half a decade now, and over the years I've talked a lot about air guitar.  It usually starts with describing what air guitar is, and more often than not you can tell in that moment where the conversation will go.  A person will either respond with some level of disgust and will non-verbally let you know that they could care less about what you have to say.  Or, you will see a burning curiosity in their eye.
